The fix is passing a parameter to the kernel module, but a) You don't expect to have to do that with Intel WiFi and b) You don't expect to have to do that on beginner friendly distros. Both ElementaryOS Freya and Ubuntu 15.04 would connect to the router, get an IP address, and then refuse to do anything else. I was asked to make an older HP laptop with an Intel 5100AGN 'functional' for someone in the family. While I have had good experiences with Atheros based cards, I'm afraid this dongle still craps out about twice a day - fixed by unplugging and replugging. Things were still just as bad and so I shifted to a TpLink WN722N with an Atheros AR9271 chipset after reading some (old?) reviews.

Plural.Ī few rounds of RTFM later, the solution recommended was these drivers. Packet drops exceed 98% on otherwise solid networks. Out of the box, the WiFi simply didn't run on Arch (I mention this to rule out outdated packages).
